Diabetes is a combination of metabolic diseases, resulting in a very

high level of blood sugar for a prolonged time.

This is caused by the inadequate production of the hormone insulin,

or the resistance of body cells to the hormone, or both factors, to

control the blood sugar levels. Insulin is excreted from the pancreas

and is necessary for the cells to utilize glucose as an energy source.

Today, 3 main types of diabetes are recognized:

          • Type 1 diabetes

(previously known as insulin dependent, or

juvenile diabetes). This consists of 10-15% of cases and is mainly

          found in children.

          • Type 2 diabetes

(previously known as not insulin dependent

diabetes, or adult diabetes). This consists of 90% of cases and is

          usually found in overweight adults.

          • Type 3:

          Diabetes due to pregnancy
