EYE SURGERY SIMULATORS

Pioneering in the education of ophthalmologists, the Athens Eye Hospital has the only realistic simulators in Greece for cataract and posterior segment surgery, and indirect ophthalmoscopy.

Using the most contemporary three-dimensional virtual reality technology, the trainee ophthalmologists are able to become familiar with the equipment and surgical handling in a specially designed environment without stress and the pressure of time.

The conditions are resemble those of a real theater with microscopes, surgical instruments and phacoemulsification and vitrectomy machines, where the trainee has complete control over parameters by using touch screens and authentic machine pedals.

There are different levels of difficulty; from simple surgical handling for beginners, up to established complications for the more advanced trainees, while the integrated performance analysis system identifies errors and provides the trainee with a detailed performance report.

Indirect ophthalmoscope simulator

The indirect ophthalmoscope simulation system is an essential learning tool for all ophthalmologists.

Up until presently, the study of funduscopic images could only be done via two-dimensional images of a view or an ophthalmology book, however, the simulator converts the examination of the retina into a fully realistic three-dimensional experience.

Trainees learn how to properly handle the indirect ophthalmoscope and its lenses, to recognize and accurately describe changes in the fundus and the vitreous, while the large number of cases included in the simulator's database, helps them to gain substantial clinical experience in a wide range of eye disorders.
