The benefits of correcting strabismus

The correction of strabismus is both for aesthetic and functional reasons. Both reasons are particularly important.

The correction of strabismus is both for aesthetic and functional reasons. Both reasons are particularly important.

Normal appearance and self-esteem
Someone being satisfied with his appearance is very important for all phases and all ages of human life. People with obvious strabismus are at a disadvantage from their early school years to their adult life. A young child’s classmates at school can be very hard on him and bully mercilessly because one of his eyes squints.
During adolescence strabismus can lead to low self-esteem and even affect relationships with the opposite sex. After adulthood, where the person becomes more social and out professionally, strabismus can have negative effects on his development, his encounters and even in his professional career.

Improved visual function
Surgical treatment of strabismus can improve some patients’ vision, eliminating diplopia and giving (if surgery is done at an early age) the possibility of a good degree of stereoscopic vision.Children with incoherent strabismus (strabismus whose angle varies according to the eye position) are often forced to adopt a "skewed" head tilt, in order to bring their eyes into alignment.

Similarly, children with nystagmus (involuntary eye movement) turn their head in such a way as to stop the annoying motion. In these cases, the operation will not only improve the functional problem but the aesthetic problem as well by restoring the head position and posture to normal.
